Victories Forum Begins March 21, 2009
Over
the past several years, our weekend graduates have frequently
expressed interest in attending briefer programs that would expand
upon the themes of their BreakThrough and Wisdom Years
experiences. With this in mind, we are pleased to announce the
Victories Forum, a series of half-day workshops on topics of
importance to men and their families, each offered on a Saturday
morning from 9:00am to noon at the Evanston Ecology Center. These workshops are open to the general public, and we encourage you to invite family and friends.
The
following is the schedule to date for the 2009 Victories Forum
workshops. As mentioned above, all workshops will be held at the
Evanston Ecology Center from 9:00am to noon. If you are interested in
presenting future workshops, please contact Rick Simon (rick.simon@victoriesoftheheart.org).
You may register online for all Victories Forum events. All events are $20, and free to sustaining members.

Nov 14 - Men and Divorce: Surviving and Thriving
Past Forum Events
September 26 - Retirement: Now What
One
third of your life may be spent in retirement doing something other
than what you are doing now. These years can be meaningful, productive
and joyful. They can also be marked by a sense of isolation, boredom,
or irrelevance. What you experience during this time can be affected by
the choices you make, starting not when you retire but right now.
If you are 50 or older and contemplating retirement, you will want to explore your options by attending Retirement: Now What?,
a workshop offered as part of the Victories Forum series. Its
presenters, four individuals who have taken strikingly different
approaches to retirement, will discuss a variety of factors that enter
into pre-retirement thinking including the options, obstacles,
benefits, and risks.
The workshop will include brief
presentations, a panel discussion, and time for Q&A. It will be
moderated by Wisdom Years graduate Henry Feldman, the former principal
of Concord Asset Management and a recent retiree who devotes much of
his time to writing and teaching. He will be joined by Mary Jane
Grinstead, a former IBM executive who is now an author and editor; her
husband Phil, also an IBM retiree who devotes time to volunteering; and
Rick Simon, VOH Executive Director, whose retirement from a marketing
career has included a new graduate degree and a second career in
counseling.
This workshop is designed for men and women and is
open to the general public. It will be held from 9:00am to noon on
September 26, 2009 at the Evanston Ecology Center,
2024 McCormick Boulevard in Evanston. Its cost is $20, which includes
coffee and bagels. Registration can be completed online or by
contacting Peggy Cicero (peggy.cicero@victoriesoftheheart.org, 312.604.5013)
It
is perfectly natural to defer thinking about the future, especially
during times of economic distress. But it can also be unwise. The older
we get the more likely we are to realize that time is far more valuable
than money - and that the longer we delay retirement planning, the
fewer options we will have. Begin planning now by attending Retirement: Now What?

Money & Relationships: A Workshop for Couples
Research
shows that one of the most common causes of stress for couples is
money - a stress that can only be amplified in an economy as difficult
as today's. Money concerns can erode our confidence, fuel our
disagreements, and prolong our silences. And they can challenge the
potential of a couple's relationship to reduce our stress and help us
cope.
This workshop will guide couples in exploring the
impact of money upon their relationships and upon themselves as
individuals. It will help them clarify the meaning of money in their
lives and identify the money issues that need to be discussed. And it
will show them techniques for addressing money concerns in ways that
strengthen their bond rather than stress it.
The program will be presented by Steve Wallman,
a psychotherapist who specializes in relationship issues, major life
transitions, and general counseling with individuals, couples,
families, and groups; David Kahn, a portfolio manager and principle with SagePoint Financial; and Brian James, a Divorce Mediator with C.E.L. & Associates, Inc., a private practice dedicated to peaceful and cost effective divorces.

How to Remove the Yelling from Your Home - No, Seriously! Handling Conflict With Your Children
Is
there too much yelling in your home? Too much conflict with your young
or adolescent children? Too much arguing about homework and household
responsibilities? Do you sometimes question your parenting skills or
wonder if you're losing control? Do you find yourself ready for your
children to move out of the house - even though they're still in
middle school? You deserve an environment where you're not walking on
eggshells, where communication and cooperation prevail, where calm
replaces conflict. If you would like to reduce the yelling in your
home, this workshop can show you how.
In an interesting,
interactive, and often humorous way, nationally known parenting experts
Derek and Gail Randel will help parents explore tips and techniques
they can learn in the morning and begin to apply that very afternoon.
They include:
- Developing a Parenting Plan
- Deflecting Conflicts
- Accessing the Power of Choice
- Ending the Arguments over Homework
- Modeling
- Unlearning Old Parenting Myths
Derek
has appeared on many television shows including Fox News Channel's
'The O'Reilly Factor' with Bill O'Reilly, CNN's The Nancy Grace Show,

The Challenge of Intimate Relationships: A Workshop for Couples
Led by Leo and Peggy Dhont
We
cordially invite you to help us launch the 2009 Victories Forum by
attending The Challenge of Intimate Relationships: A Workshop for
Couples. This three-hour program will explore Couples Dialogue, a
communications technique that can help partners improve their ability
to listen and to share each others perspectives. As a result, it can
help them strengthen their relationships through rekindled romance and
reduced discord. The workshop will be led by the husband-wife team of
Leo Dhont, LCSW and Peggy Dhont, who for many years have facilitated
the highly regarded Imago programs developed by Harville Hendrix.
According
to one couple who attended a similar Victories Forum workshop last
year, “This was a wonderful program - relevant, wise, and helpful. We
continue to use the communications techniques we learned from Leo and
Peggy.”
NOTE: The Victories
Forum is offered as a public service by Victories of the Heart, NFP.
The presenters are known to us as professionals with expertise in the
subject matter of their workshops. They donate their time to
